Copyright Details and Terms of Use for My Patterns
As quilters are becoming more educated about copyright, many are also becoming
more confused. This is quite understandable as copyright law is a very confusing
subject. I can't fully explain the copyright laws to you nor can I
speak for other designers as a whole, but I can try to explain how I expect
quilters to honor copyright in regard to my patterns.
Unless otherwise stated, all patterns are provided for
your personal use only and may not be reproduced by any means for the
purpose of selling or distributing freely to others.
This means you may not make copies of my patterns for anybody but you
or the people living in your household (children, elderly parent, etc.) without
getting permission from me. If you love a pattern and want to share
it with someone, please do the following:
1. give them the url to my website so they can obtain their own
pattern, or
2. if they don't have a computer, suggest they use one at a local
library or invite them over to use your computer, or
3. if using a computer just isn't an option, e-mail me or write
to me and briefly explain the situation. I'm a reasonable person
(I think!) and I'm sure we can find a good solution that won't violate any
laws. For example, if someone without computer access wants a copy of a
free pattern, they can send me a SASE and a 5" x 5" fabric square
(to cover printing costs and my time) in a letter postmarked before the
last day that pattern will be free.
4. I can send a printed "catalog" of my designs upon written request
to someone without internet access.
What you choose to do with the project you make using my
free patterns, whether it be a quilt, a
tote bag, a sweatshirt, or whatever, is your choice as long as you are
not producing projects for the purpose of selling them (this generally
excludes charity raffles). I'm simply asking that you don't
try to gain financially from something that I've freely given to you. I'm
giving you the right to make 2 items with a free
pattern. You can give your finished projects to anyone you like,
including great-aunt Sophie's dog who slobbers on everything. If you're
giving your project to a charity for a raffle, please add a statement like
"pattern courtesy of Sundrop Designs, www.sundropdesigns.com," to the information
card/flyer. Sending me a photo of the project or a note about the
raffle is also appreciated. If you want to sell your projects for your
personal benefit, please purchase the pattern.
When you purchase most of my patterns, you get permission
to use it to make up to 20 projects per pattern for the purpose
of selling those projects for your own profit (craft fairs, website, custom
orders, etc.). Some patterns have a lower limit.
Okay, let's say you have a Baby Boutique booth in your local craft mall
and you want to use Spritz the Chick on some of your items. By purchasing
the pattern, you have the right to put Spritz the Chick on 20 items, whether
it be 20 quilts or 5 bibs/5 t-shirts/5 hats/5 quilts or any combination
of items that add up to 20. If they sell well and you want to make
another 20 items, purchase the pattern again to gain the right to make 20
more. If your iems continue to sell, you can purchase the pattern again
to make another 20 items. If you want to make more than 100, write me
for information about licensing fees. These are the rights I'm selling
with my patterns - please don't assume that other designers are offering the
same rights.
Giving credit where credit is due (e.g., Sundrop Critter
copyrighted/designed by Sandy Harris) is always nice. Do give credit
on any project you intend to sell.
Although giving credit is a nice thing to do, I'm not going to require
it on items you give away. However, if you're using my patterns to
make items for sale, please make a statement somewhere, somehow to the
effect that my designs are copyrighted and used with permission or that
the pattern was designed by me.
