Hide and Seek Blocks
Look Around!  The free BOM and projects aren't the only freebies.  There's another freebie hiding somewhere on this site, but you have to look around to find it!  These bonus freebies may stay put or move to another spot or be replaced by another block at my whim.  Have fun!

Christmas Fairies Quilt Cards

Aren't these fairies lovely?!  The patterns are for 8" x 10" blocks, making them the perfect size for framing with traditional wood or metal picture frames.  But they can be used for more traditional quiltmaking projects or appliqued on garments, tote bags, etc.

I'm usually not a glitzy kind of person, but Christmas is the exception.  These blocks were especially designed to be embellished!  Gather up your beads, ribbons, laces, sequins, etc. and have fun decorating these fairies to the hilt!

Below are blocks that I've been working on.  Disclaimer: I am not responsible for quality of workmanship at the present time.  When the rains returned, my studio was infiltrated by mice in such quantity that I was forced to give up my "silly" notion of having a cat-free work space.  I now share quarters with a 9-year-old cat (behaves good as gold) and a 4-month-old kitten (well, someday she'll behave good as gold, right?).  No mice.  But, in trade, I must share my "toys" with a curious kitten or wait until she takes a nap to do anything.

In reality, the gold sequins are more yellowish than the scan shows.
For the Poinsettia Fairy, I used gold sequins and tiny gold seed beads.  I used 4 different red fabrics and see that some of the flowers blend together more than I'd like.  Next time, I'll use more variety in my reds, probably adding some fuschia or dark rose tones with them, and I think I'll try yellow beads.

I rarely use placement guides, preferring to "eyeball" where things go. But with these patterns, I recommend using some kind of guide for the border placement, expecially if it has to fit the 8" x 10" framework.  I didn't use any guides here and you can see how things got skewed a bit off on the left side.

I'm still deciding how to do his face.  I might use beads, or I might paint his facial features.  There's a white dot in the hair fabric that I'll color with a fabric pen.

On Rosemary, I chose to use antique colored pearl beads.  In the scan, they look white, but in reality they are more cream colored.  I'd like to use pale yellow beads, but haven't found any at local sources.  I used 6-strand embroidery thread for the fringes on her dress.  Everything else is fabric.

I goofed and ironed the fusible web to the right side of my fabric for the border leaves, but decided to use it anyway.  The leaves look a little pale as a result, so I decided to try outlining them with green bugle beads.  Still deciding whether I like the effect or not.  I'm afraid if I outline them, they'll steal the show unless I outline Rosemary, too.

The cloud background seems to make Rosemary look like an angel more than a fairy.  What do you think?

Progress Report

Rosemary is nearly finished!  Even with the beads outlining them, the border leaves seemed too faint, so I colored them with a fabric marker.  Then I outlined the flowers using tiny blue seed beads and bits of bugle beads.  Quilting is the next step. (Yes, I do things backwards sometimes!  It's usually best to do the beads after the quilting.)
